Amathunzi attracts nature lovers, but it is also a great destination for wine lovers who can spend days exploring the best wine estates in the Robertson valley - at last count a choice of 31. White wine lovers shouldn't miss a tasting at Springfield, where winemaker Abrie Bruwer produces one of South Africa's best sauvignon blancs, and if you like your bubbly, try the classic Methode Cap Classique Brut at Graham Beck. If you are serious about your wine, we are happy to make more recommendations.

The charming, off-the-beaten-track town of McGregor lies under an hour away, its quiet streets lined with whitewashed, thatch-topped buildings - said to be the best preserved and most complete example of mid-19th century Western Cape village. McGregor is also home to Temenos Retreat, which offers a variety of healing therapies should you feel in need of a little pampering (the restaurant is also recommended).

For the more active adventurer there is river rafting down the Breede river, horseriding through vineyards, quad bike tours, fishing, pleasure cruises… the region is rich with things to do, and our lodge staff on hand to assist with recommendations and telephone details.
